Ring gold, the secret behind white gold.

There are basically two kind of gold ring.
The first one is the traditional yellow color
ring in gold. While some people do like
yellow gold ring for their engagement ring,
more and more people are choosing
white gold ring. White gold is actually
an alloy of gold mix together with other
white metals such as silver or nickel.
Ring gold, rhodium coating for white gold.
White gold jewelry are usually coated
with rhodium which are highly reflective
because wihlte gold natural color is gray.
Plating also have the purpose of
preventing oxidation besides
adding luster to the jewelry. The normal
amount of rhodium plated on white gold
is only between 0.05 to 0.5 micrometer.
Generally, this is considered to be
a very thin layer of plating so cracks
often develop easily. To have more durable
and longer lasting protection for your white gold ring,
a plating of 2.0 micrometers is recommended. If your white
gold diamond ring needs plating,
your local jeweller should be able to do that.
Ring gold, beware of nickel.
Some people have allergic to nickel. If you're
going to buy a wedding ring in white gold,
be sure to check with your local jeweller that the
ring is nickel free. A high quality white gold ring
or jewelry will not need rhodium coating because
of the good color it has. Only low quality
alloys needs rhodium plating to look
like white gold.
